Trew started his insurance career with a small Lloyd’s broking house in the mid 60’s. He first visited the Far East on business in 1974 and has spent a great deal of working life in the region since then whilst always based in London. As a result of various mergers and acquisitions was 30+ years with A&A/AHRB before leaving, prior to the Aon acquisition, to join Johnson & Higgins for the three years before they were acquired by Marsh. In both groups, whilst a senior executive of the International Reinsurance operations, he was Chairman of the Asia Pacific production and marketing operations coordinating the Retail, Wholesale and Reinsurance operations for the region and latterly to establish a suitable interface for those services into the general financial services sector of the international insurance industry. .
Trew specialised in Japanese, Korean and Chinese insurance business development with the emphasis changing as the various economies evolved. He was a Member of Lloyd’s for 25 years and has had a series of senior directorships in many companies around the world which included the Lloyd’s Underwriting operations of the Nissan and Hyundai Groups where he established the Lloyd’s Syndicate and the Corporate Capital Investment vehicles concerned.
Trew started his own Lloyd’s broker (GJT&P) in 1997 which achieved Lloyd’s accreditation within the required three years grace period and that company became Swinglehurst Ltd. In 2001 GJT&P was spun off as an independent management and business consultancy operation specialising in China and the Far East. The business model in China included international market coordination and new product development consultancy activities for a number of domestic insurance companies in the rapidly developing Chinese market. In early 2008, GJT&P (HK) established an Asia specific K&R scheme that it continues to manage and is administered out of Hong Kong.
Trew is based in London and Gibraltar. He is the Executive Chairman and a significant shareholder of Sovereign Insurance Services which has been established to provide insurance & reinsurance broking facilities for the Sovereign Group and their 20,000 HNW clients and 6,000 corporate clients through their 25 offices world-wide (see www.sovereigngroup.com). The insurance broking facilities are also made available to non-Group clients who benefit from the international market presence of the Group and the marketing strengths of the insurance and reinsurance brokerage operation.
Trew also currently holds insurance related directorships and senior consultancy appointments in the UK, China, Hong Kong and Gibraltar.
